Restaurants in Sandpoint and North Idaho
run the gamut of culinary types, and most people can find something that
fits their palates. We have a culinary program, a world-class ski resort,
and every type of cuisine from Sushi to Italian, Philly Cheese Steaks to
good old fashioned hamburgers.
The numbered ratings come from
a reader's poll in Yahoo Travel. My ratings come from my personal experience.
What qualifies me to make such judgments? I worked with Emeril
Legasse for several years, was main dining room Captain at the #1 ranked
restaurant in the nation - Commander's Palace in New Orleans, taught at a
culinary school, and host the show Gourmet to Go and North Idaho Arts and
Adventure on KSPT and KBFI. Many of the chefs and owners of these
restaurants have been on one of the shows. In general, I think we have a
pretty good dining environment, including grocery stores. Keep in mind that
I visit all restaurants, but only over a year period or so for some, and
more often for others. Menus change, owners change, management changes,
servers, cooks, and chefs change. Hopefully we get it right, but if you had
a different experience. please let us know so we can update our page. So, bon appetit!
A & P's BAR & GRILL
C'mon, if you haven't been to 219 and crossed the street into A & P's,

Arlo’s Ristorante
(Italian)
Rated #2
for all Sandpoint Restaurants by Yahoo Travel. There was a rift between Chef
Christopher and his sister and brother-in-law, but all seems well at Arlo’s
with his families recipes from his childhood in New York City. Fabulous
entrees, dazzling appetizers and wonderful homemade desserts are favorites
of locals and visitors. Nice out door deck, and some good Italian wines.
They had a recent fire and are making repairs, but will reopen soon. In
fact, saw the lights on today, so maybe tomorrow? Loved the Amarone we had last time there.

Bamboo Chinese Restaurant
(Chinese)
Chinese food prepared fresh daily. An extensive menu offering a variety of
Szechuan and Mandarin dishes. Beer and wine available. So, friendly and
fairly fast service, which can be important at lunch time. Now, with the new
Panhandle State Bank right across the street, they may become busier. So try
before they are too slammed.

Beach House
(American)
Rated #6
for all
Sandpoint Restaurants by Yahoo Travel. Okay, so they don’t have the four-star
cuisine that the view warrants, but the food isn’t bad, and can at times be
good. What the Beach House has are unbelievable lake and mountain views from
the deck or in the restaurant. The deck is covered and heated for winter
visits, and the bar is our favorite. For ambiance, the best in town.

Beyond Hope Resort
(Eclectic
Cuisine)
In this unpretentious
supper club in Hope, you'll find some of Sandpoint's most innovative
cuisine. For lunch, you can't beat the Damn Good Cheeseburger or Perfect
Pork Ribs. And for dinner, try the seared Ahi tuna appetizer, followed by
Molasses Glazed Porterhouse steak or Grilled Salmon with sweet onion
marmalade. Plus a full bar, a view of Lake Pond Oreille, and the sort of
attentive yet folksy service you'd expect in a local diner. Lived 300 yards

(American
Breakfast)
In
Ivano's old location, Blue Moon started with breakfast, now serves lunch,
and dinner occasionally or is not far off the horizon. They spent a bundle
in time and effort fixing up the old building, and though they have taken
their time moving from breakfast to lunch and now to dinner, when they do
something, they seem to do it well. I've eaten lunch there several times,
and it is always good. While it isn't something that makes me want to yell
their praises from the mountain tops, it is always satisfying, and portions
are good.

Cafe Trinity
(Eclectic Southern & New
Orleans Cuisine)
Okay, so Chef Gabe used to
be the chef at Beyond Hope when we lived on the Hope Peninsula. Then he
became the instructor for the local Culinary program, that I helped start.
So I kinda like him personally. But now he has left to work at Chimney Rock
up on Schweitzer. Their menu features Southern-inspired
food, such as gumbo, éttoufé and Po'Boy sandwiches, as well as steaks and
fresh seafood. Well, I am from New Orleans, and they do it well. First year
they were open they were Sandpoint’s best new restaurant. Now they have kept
some of that Southern flair, but have tempered their menu to Tapas, with
Sushi from Oiishi. Whether you are
having dinner on their nice deck overlooking Sand Creek, or sitting at
the dining bar and exhibition kitchen, you will enjoy a taste of the South
in beautiful North Idaho. Serving lunch and dinner. Beer and wine available.

I have never driven
to this restaurant. While it is cool and has a full bar, the food is more of
the hearty variety. Drive or boat in to this Hard Liquor Saloon at Garfield

steaks, ribs, chicken, burgers, salads, munchies and desserts, including
homemade cheese cake. Call or visit their website for the calendar of

Chimney Rock Grill
(American)
In
the Selkirk Lodge at Schweitzer, the Chimney Rock Grill offers family dining
with breathtaking mountain and
lake views. Open for summer and winter featuring breakfast, lunch and
dinner. Full service cocktail lounge with
daily drink specials. One of Wine Spectator’s award winning restaurants
because of their extensive selection of
Northwest Wines. However, do not
expect regional cuisine, in spite of the name. One summer the closest they
came to serving a northwestern dish was Jamaican Jerk Chicken. Still, good
food in a cool place.

Chophouse
(Steakhouse)
Rated #1
for all Sandpoint Restaurants by Yahoo Travel the Chophouse is located in
the recently restored Pastime Building. Once known for their steak, they exclusively
served prime cut beef and a daily seafood delivery that maintains a
distinctive selection. They have since changed their menu, and are for sale. Perhaps
once Sandpoint’s finest dining experience, Platinum cards were necessary. It cost.
Till, when you’re finished, dance the
calories away in the other part of the Pastime Building: the nightclub
called synergy.

Connie's Café
(American)
One of the venerable old Sandpoint standbys, Connie’s has daily lunch and
dinner specials, great breakfasts and coffee. Food is always good, and they
have a full service lounge with a comfortable atmosphere. Had the new owners
on my radio show a few months ago. See, Connie's had closed, and a couple of
the girls who ran the place on the floor took over as the new owners. Kept
some of the things that worked on the menu, and put some yummy new stuff in
there too. Renovated the bar, and I like it soooo much better.

THE CRAGGY
RANGE
(American)
Located in the Powerhouse building, just as
you enter Sandpoint off the Longbridge, this
American style bar and grill features typical food found in these kinds of
establishments. Run by a company that has successfully presented various
offerings such as their sister restaurant in Whitefish, Montana and other
eateries, this one does it well, with good steaks and food. They haven't yet
begun utilizing the space overlooking the Sandpoint Marina, but will soon.
The bar is good, and while the prices are a bit high, you can virtually
guarantee a good meal. They still have some kinks to work out. When being
charged $8.00 for a Gran Marnier, you naturally expect a brandy snifter, not
a shot glass, but compared to the restaurant it replaced, the Powerhouse Bar
& Grill, this is light years better. Still, looks like they didn't like
the slow down in the winter, so they closed their doors, but will reopen in
April.

Probably my
favorite restaurant in Bonner. At Holiday Shores Marina in Hope. Waterfront
cafe accessible by boat or car, the Dock features locally raised buffalo,
chicken, beef and vegetarian entrees with a flare of spices, salsa and
samba. The Dock also flies fresh fish from far-flung fishing fleets for fine
friends. Relax with panoramic views of Lake Pend Oreille. Great outdoor dock

Fiesta Bonita
(Mexican)
Jose does
a superior job at bringing hot Mexican cuisine to the cold North. While I
once believed the cuisine was more
inspired by the Yucatan, one of our reader's let me know that it has other
facets. He says: "the food is
more Jalisco-style, which is apparently where several of them are from."
So, let's call it a Mexican hodgepodge (That's mezcolanza in
Spanish). Fiesta Bonita is a step above Joel’s in
presentation and ambiance, and more authentic than Jalapeno’s. Yummy, yummy,
yummy.

Hope Market Cafe
(American)
I have enjoyed so many sandwiches and lunches there I can hardly count them
now. Besides a great view, the food is a very decent and consistently good
offering. Plus, unlike a lot of other establishments here, prices are
bearable. That is good, because Hope is not a happenin' place come
wintertime. The Hope Market Cafe is supported by a loyal following of
locals, and the store offers some things that make this place truly special.
For instance, recently I bought a flight of the Dunn Howell Mountain Cab.
This flight consists of the three cabs produced from 1999 to 2001. If you
are familiar with wine, you will know that for just $300, this was a true
bargain. The cheese selection is almost as fantastic as the great wine
choices. They have truffle oils, gourmet foods, a good beer selection, all
paired with good food and a killer view. Good job Hope Market Cafe.

HOTEL HOPE
(Steak, Seafood, & Pasta)
The stunning views and sunsets from the
hotel restaurant match the very good food presented. Haven't had a bad meal
yet. They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and are open in the winter,
which is a great thing if you live out in Clark Fork or Hope. With the
exception of the Hope Market Cafe, most other eateries in that neck of the
woods close for the season. Chef Elissa Robbins is fairly creative, and the
fare can range from complex, to simple, utilizing the freshest
ingredients.Beer, wine and cocktails are available in our bar. Oh, btw, the
bar rocks.

THE LANDING
(Steak &
Seafood)
Was Swan's,
and loved the bar. A few months ago I began going back to this old stand by.
Now in its third incarnation, I was disappointed with their lunch. The food
was good enough, but to have a gyro made with imitation beef for $10, I
realized that, like many people overvaluing their homes, this restaurant
believed its view was the only thing people were coming there for. That made
me sad, because no matter the decor, view, or ambiance, if the food sucks,
failure is imminent. Two more times I had marginal lunches.
I mean, the food was okay, but the prices
were way out of line for what you got. Granted, nice scenery, but you can
get that at other, cheaper, and better tasting places nearby. Then I had
dinner, and that was significantly better. I guess that when it is dark and
you can't see the lake and mountains, the food had to be better. Well, now
all that has changed. The owner/manager Len got a new chef. Gary has been at
Trinity, the Crossings at Willow Bay, and other fine local eateries. I
believe he puts out perhaps the most consistently delicious meals of all our
local chefs. Had dinner there recently with clients, and boy was it yummy.
So, pay the price, and find out what truly great food is like when coupled
with spectacular views. Worth every penny.

Once
Yoke’s made their own bread, and there was another bakery in town, but now
there is only Winter Ridge and Pine Street Bakery. And it is a very good
bakery. All the breads are baked fresh daily, from baguettes to big country
loaves. Besides cakes (they have a brisk wedding cake biz) there are
chocolate croissants, linzer bars, key lime bars, and individual cheesecakes
and tarts.

Pretty
good burgers, but it can take a while. Simple menu. Since my first review,

Nice atmosphere with a very good menu that is almost always well executed.

French-Asian cuisine with an accent on fresh Northwest ingredients, all

SLATES SPORTS BAR
(Amercan)
Good sports bar with multiple screens, private party room in the back, full
liquor bar, regular live music, and comedians. Dependable good food though
the atmosphere could be a bit better. That should soon become a reality
since they are moving to a much better location, just north of the Bonner
Mall on Highway 95.

THREE GLASSES
(Incredible Italian food and wine list)
My number 1 rated restaurant. A superlative wine bar in the cellar area behind First Street, this
restaurant is the lovingly portrayed efforts of John and Darcy Peters, my
neighbors from the Hope Peninsula. They brought in a chef from Alba Italy,
Luigi, and the ambiance, decor, and wine selection matches the food
perfectly. In a word: wonderful. The piano streams live music, and while
very well appointed, the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. In the works is
an addition to the restaurant upstairs, as well as a gourmet deli. Did we
need this restaurant? Absolutely. With so many new and very good offerings
for eateries in Sandpoint, this is the best. Admittedly my first meal there
was shared with my good friend, Johnny Knight, from KPND, and our meal
tallied almost $300 for just the two of us. But John keeps vintage
selections of superlative wines, and we enjoyed a ripe, decade old Amarone.
I had rabbit, John had rack of lamb. A perfect meal and they had been open
just a week! They have gotten even better since then. A truly welcome addition.
